A Brief History of South Jordan
South Jordan’s story begins with the Jordan River, the waterway that gave the city its name. The first Mormon pioneers reached the Salt Lake Valley in 1847, and within a few years, settlers began moving south along the river in search of farmland. Alexander Beckstead, a blacksmith originally from Ontario, Canada, is credited as the area’s first permanent settler when he relocated his family to the region in 1859. Because water was scarce west of the river, Beckstead and his neighbors dug a hand-built irrigation channel known as the Beckstead Ditch, stretching more than two miles to bring water to their crops of wheat, barley, and potatoes.
For decades, South Jordan remained a quiet agricultural community built around farming and livestock. The town was officially incorporated in November 1935, and it continued as a small, close-knit farming settlement for much of the twentieth century. That began to change in the 1990s and 2000s as Salt Lake City’s growth pushed south. The launch of the master planned Daybreak community in the early 2000s transformed South Jordan’s western half, bringing new homes, shops, and the 67-acre Oquirrh Lake to what had once been farmland and mining land owned by Kennecott.
Today, South Jordan is one of the fastest growing cities in Utah, and it holds a distinctive honor: it was the first city in the world to be home to two Latter-day Saint temples, the Jordan River Utah Temple and the Oquirrh Mountain Utah Temple.
