When a tooth is extremely worn down or damaged, a great solution is a dental crown or tooth cap. A crown helps a tooth get back to its natural chewing capability and makes it great. We use crowns to:
- Protect and cover chipped or cracked teeth.
- Strengthening teeth damaged by decay.
- Reinforce teeth that are worn down.
- Replace a tooth or teeth using implants or bridges.
Dental crowns are a combination of art and science. We enjoy picking out the color of porcelain to match your smile and shaping the new crown just right to fit in, look great, and function in a healthy way.
What Are Same-Day Crowns?
We use the CEREC system. CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restorations of Esthetic Ceramic. We have a CEREC milling machine right here in our office. With this, we shape quality ceramic into new crowns while you’re here in a single appointment.
If you need a crown placed over an existing tooth, your appointment will include:
- Scanning: Advanced optical and x-ray techniques let us put a digital version of your tooth into the computer.
- Design: Using special software, we’ll create your dental crown on the computer first. You’ll be able to see it on the screen before we create it in reality.
- Milling: We transfer your crown design to the CEREC manufacturing machine. We’ll use ceramic material that has been matched to the color of your teeth.
- Tooth Preparation: We’ll shape your existing tooth to be ready for the crown to fit over it and create a functional new tooth surface.
- Restoration: When your crown is ready, Dr. Robison will bond it to your existing tooth and make sure it looks, feels, and functions great.
This is the usual process for covering a tooth after a procedure or cosmetically improving a tooth using a crown.
Benefits of Dental Crowns
If you have an otherwise beautiful smile and need just one problem tooth fixed, a dental crown will create a great-looking tooth to complete your smile.
The amazing part is we can craft your new tooth in just over an hour. You don’t have to wear a temporary crown or come back for a second appointment. Plan for one appointment—usually under an hour long—and we can create and place your crown in one sitting.
Here are some other advantages of getting dental crowns with our CEREC system:
- Aesthetics: They look great when we color-match them to your teeth and customize their shape.
- Convenience: We complete the process in one visit in 1 hour or less.
- Durability: A crown helps protect your tooth from future damage and infection. This supports your natural tooth material, helping you keep your own tooth long-term.
- Metal-Free: We don’t use metal in crowns, making them look natural. This practice also caters to those with health concerns about metal fillings and appliances.
When some of our patients have had to endure temporary crowns in the past and come weeks later for a permanent crown, they’ve breathed a sigh of relief when the entire process is finished in a single appointment.
Who Needs a Tooth Crown?
Would a dental crown help you? Not everyone needs one, but you might if you have:
- A Major Cavity: If a cavity is big enough to weaken your tooth structure, a crown will reinforce and protect your tooth.
- Cosmetic Tooth Problems: A crown can reshape and recolor a tooth.
- A Worn Filling: If your old filling wears out, we can remove it, prepare your tooth, and place a crown over the tooth.
- A Root Canal Treatment: After cleaning an infection out of a tooth, a crown can seal the tooth up and protect it from another infection.
Whatever your reason for getting a crown, we’re excited to create it and bond it to your tooth in a single appointment.
